Drop warm-up drill
Objective: To get used to defensive movement and helping defence. Description: If 2 has the ball, his defender blocks towards him (in reality blocking on the line of the post), while 3's defender drops, hips up towards 3, facing the centre forward. The opposite applies if 3 gets the ball. Keep working the ball between 2 and 3 to practice the movement. |

If 2
manages to feed the ball in and 6 puts it back out to the perimeter,
3's defender has missed the crash, but stays back. 2's defender moves
over to 3, being closer. 3's defender needs to be ready to move over
to cover 2.

Supposing the clock is counting down, the defence can progress to the defender now on 2 gapping between 2 and 3, while the other defender stays back. The defence becomes a variation of an M-Zone or an M-Zone itself, with the higher defender ready to counter.

Driving the drop out
Objective: The attack aims to clear a dropping defender by driving. Description: 3 passes to 2 and drives and his defender has to follow. This may result in a number of outcomes: - 2 may be able to feed the centre forward - 4 (or 5) may find themselves able to shoot - 3 may become free on the drive to receive the pass. A variation is 2 driving to the right or left hand of the goal, or 3 driving to the right of the goal if the centre forward is marked on the other side. |
