Objective: To disrupt attacks at the perimeter, stopping each outfield attacker receiving the ball and interfering with their pass, if they do receive it, and to steal the ball if it goes into the centre forward. To use up the time on the attacker's clock.
Description: Defenders mark attacking players individually, in close contact with their opposing player. Defenders should attempt to position themselves between the player they are marking and the ball, with their hips up (so that they can change direction quickly). On the perimeter, should the player they are marking receive the ball, they should stop that player passing, fouling if necessary. If the minor foul is conceded, the defender must position themselves between the ball and the centre forward, blocking the pass in. Defenders must be aware: 1 of the attacker they are marking 2 where the ball is 3 of the area around them 4 of what is happening at centre forward 5 where the goal is. |

Should the ball be passed into the centre forward, defenders must "crash" back to steal the ball so that the centre forward cannot pick his shot and so that the centre back is not left to mark the centre forward on his own more than momentarily.

Defenders must help eachother, by switching attacking players. For example in the diagram, attacker 4 has escaped his defender and 5's defender picks up that attacker, while 5 is picked up by the defender who lost his opponent.

When the ball is on the defence's left side of play and the centre back is also on the left side or fronting the centre forward, 1 and 2's defenders will press and not foul. The defenders of the players at 6, 5 and 4 positions stop the ball going to their opponents.

If the ball goes to one of the players on the defence's right hand side, 4 or 5 within seven metres, the player with the ball should be minor-fouled. The goalkeeper should advance to prevent the ball being played into the centre forward. 1 and 2 position should continue to be pressed without a foul.

If the centre forward is able to position himself well in relation to the defender (the defender finds himself behind the centre, or on the centre's right shoulder where the centre is right handed), the defence must change to a drop or zone defence, for example a drop or an M-Zone. In the diagram, the defence is moving from a pressing defence to an M-Zone.
