Playname : Play - positions and roles

1
Objective: Basic set attack formation with the players at the various positions understanding their roles.

Description:
1 position is often pressed. Whether pressed or not, this is a key position for distribution, particularly if the centre forward can get free. So you should try and make yourself available in this position, particularly if a pass to the centre forward is on.

It may be a shooting position for a left-hander although you would generally prefer to move round to 2 position.

2 position is often dropped off which is good if you have an excellent shot. Otherwise you may look to drive across to 3 position or even to 1 position which might bring a left-hander round to 2 position. This may well be a key position of distributing the ball to 4 or 5, or to a driver.

3
3 position, or point, can play a key distribution role to one side or the other. Alternatively this is a good position from which to drive, usually to 5 position, leaving room for the pass into the hole. It may well be the centre back who finds himself at this position and can drive a tired centre forward.

4
4 position is a optimal position to shoot from for a right-hander, therefore usually pressed. Your defender may drop off you momentarily to cover a driver in which case you have a shooting opportunity.

If you are not a shooter, you could consider driving to 5 position to move a shooter round to 4.

5
5 position is likely to be tightly pressed, but is a dangerous shooting position if you can get free for a moment. If another position drives through, you may find yourself round at 4, possibly with more shooting options.

6
6 position is leading the whole attack. We will not go into all the aspects of centre forward play here, but the rest of the attackers are dependent on you getting well forward to near 2 metres so that they can set up reasonably close to goal too.
