Objective: For defenders to help eachother, particularly in the transition from a counter attack to a press defence or from a press to a drop defence.
Description: In example 1, the defence has to deal with a potential counter attack. The defender at halfway on the defence's left wing leaves the player with the ball to pick up the attacking player mid-pool who has left his defender (probably the centre forward). |

2
The defender from the wing has picked up the counter attacker through the middle. The trailing defender moves to the attacker with the ball on the wing.

In example 2 illustrated, the centre forward gets position (ball-side) on the centre back. The centre back and/or goalkeeper call for help from the nearest defenders able to drop. The defenders of the attackers at 4 and 2 positions drop. The defender of the trailing attacker moves across to put the attacker at 4 with the ball under pressure.

The defence moves to regular 2-3-4 defence. In the example illustrated the attacker at 4 passes to the attacker at position 2. The defender dropped on position 2 moves out to put that attacker under pressure, while the defender who had moved to the 4 attacker drops.

In example 3 in the diagram, the attacker at position 5 takes the foul. His defender drops back to cover the pass into the centre forward.

The 5 attacker exchanges the ball with the attacker at 4, leaving 5's defender exposed both to the shot and to the feed into the centre forward, if he goes back to 5.

To help, 4's defender should move towards 5 to put that attacker under pressure. It may be just to "stunt" (threaten) towards the 5 attacker. 3's defender should also be aware to help out if necessary. 5's defender can block the shot to the post.
