Passing
Playname : Drills - peripheral vision

Objective: This is a progression of drills to improve a player's peripheral vision by focusing in the most effective direction, while being aware where a pass is coming from and where to pass to.

Description - 1st Drill: Four players in a square passing the ball round the square. Each player should practice looking at the player opposite, with the corner of the eye on the player they are receiving the ball from and the player they are passing to. So player B focuses on D, while receiving from A and passing onto C, assuming the ball is being passed clockwise round the square. The ball could also be passed anti-clockwise for a set period of time or number of passes.

2nd Drill: At the same time as A passes to B (B's focus stays on D), C holds up a hand either open or closed (as a fist). If the hand is open, B passes on to C; if the hand is closed, B passes back to A as a one-two. A should pass back to B again, who passes according to C's signal. If B is signalled to pass on to C, D makes the signal, and so on.

A variation on this is to pass clockwise round the square and the next person to be passed to signal a number from 0 (fist) to 5 and for the passer to shout out that number. For example C signals a number as A passes to B, and B calls out the number, accurately if possible. Again B's focus remains on D. Players could start with three lives and lose a life each time they call the wrong number, or don't call at all.

Variation on drills: Again four players evenly spaced - each of A, B and C have a ball in their hands. Without following a pre-determined order, one by one they pass to D and D passes back to the player who has passed to him. If a player (D) is using peripheral vision, his head will not move very much: if the player orientates his head to each player who is passing to him, he is not using peripheral vision.
