Jumping:
- Full extension, not flapping at the ball
Swimming with the ball:
- Head-up, try to look over the ball
- Strong leg-kick
Spider - used to ensure possession, moving
horizontal to vertical:
- Head up
- Freestyle arms (short and sharp)
- Eggbeater legs
Defensive body position:
- Hips and legs close to the surface
Defending drives:
- Work to keep yourself between the attacker
and the goal
- Take the extra strokes round the attacker
- Swivel with your hips on top of water
- Always keep your head above water
Dynamic swimming:
- On turns: quickly in and quickly out,
hips coming around near the surface (feet, shins often break surface)
- Short, sharp strokes and big kicks on changes of direction
Passing, shooting:
- Knees high as in eggbeater
- Arm rotates around, not above the head - keep space between ball
and head
- Shoulder and hip rotation
- Forearm bent upwards
- Leave the "off" hand in front
- Head still
- Hips facing direction passing or shooting towards
- On shot maintain a vertical position

forearm upwards (Avezedo)
Faking:
- Knees should be high and wide. Kicks should
be shallow.
- Keep the forearm bent and pointing up - the arm should not be
straight at the end of the fake. - Rotate the arm around and behind
the head and not over it.
- Aim for a smooth rotation and always being in a position you can
shoot from.
Releasing - four releases
- Jump half turn release: shrug into defender,
make a step out to the pass, pick up the ball, kick up and rotate
to make the pass.
- Stroke release: take a stroke in front of the defender, bring
your knees and shins up into the defender's chest, take a second
stroke with the same arm and rollout to receive the ball. The passer
must make sure that they pass the ball to the correct spot on the
water where the releasing player can easily move onto it, not too
far away and not too close.
- Against tight, grabbing press: wrestle
free, put shoulder into defender and kick away
- V release: receive a dry pass (others above are wet passes)
Now back
to tactical stuff.
