Passing
Playname : Drill - piggy-in-the-middle

1

Objective: To improve players' ability to hold and pass the ball under pressure. To improve the movement and condition of player's defending.

Description: Players in groups of three, with one ball, two passers 3 metres apart and one defender between them. The ball starts with one of the outside players, the defender goes to that player who holds the ball for a couple of seconds under pressure and then passes it to the other outside player.

2

The defender (3) moves to the player with the ball (2), who in turn holds it and then passes it back (1).

The drill should be done with each player in the middle for 30 seconds at a time. Players can time themselves and a variation is for the players to swap when the middle player intercepts the balls or makes a good tackle.

A further variation is to have each player receiving the ball put it on the water away from the defender and execute a jump-half-turn when the defender arrives.

Another variation is to keep the defender halfway between the passers and attempt to intercept the ball. The passers move from side to side to work good passing angles. See "Stealing" as another variation.

Coaching points: Legs working.
